Public Notice

The letter that was sent to all Melcher-Dallas residents in the July water bill was for public informational purposes only. The City has received multiple complaints from concerned citizens regarding illegal burns and several complaints regarding bushes, weeds, and low hanging trees over public sidewalks impeding passage. As a result, a letter outlining City Ordinances was sent out to notify the public of their responsibility vs City responsibility. (please see link below)

The follow up letter that was sent to individual property owners was initiated at the request of the fire department and implemented by the City Council as a result of damage inflicted to the Melcher-Dallas ambulance and potential damage to other vehicles due to low hanging branches over the street. As a result of the above mentioned issues, the City Council requested the actions taken by City employees.

Unfortunately, there are some half truths and inaccuracies being reported on Facebook. If you have questions related to City Ordinances, processes, or correspondence, please reach out to City Hall at 641-947-6501.

Tree Trimming

Please ensure the trees on your property adhere to our city code outlined below;

CHAPTER 151.03: DUTY TO TRIM TREES: The owner or agent of the abutting property shall keep the trees on, or overhanging the street, trimmed so that all branches will be at least 15 feet above the surface of the street and eight feet above the sidewalks. If the abutting property owner fails to trim the trees, the City may serve notice on the abutting property owner requiring that such action be taken within 5 days. If such action is not taken within that time, the City may perform the required action and assess the costs against the abutting property for collection in the same manner as property tax.

Burning ordinance

Please be aware that burning garbage is prohibited by City Ordinance 105.11. We have had several complaints regarding this issue. Organic yard waste is permitted if originating from your own property. Violations are subject to monetary penalties.

The City Of Melcher-Dallas

The latest available estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau of Melcher-Dallas’ population for 2019 is 1244. (https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/data/tables.html)

Located in Marion County, Melcher-Dallas is approximately 32 miles South East of the state capitol Des Moines.

We are also:
25.5 miles SE of Indianola
15.8 miles SW of Knoxville
25 miles SW of Lake Red Rock

Dallas was established in 1845, and was first called Ohio, because many of the early settlers that came to work in the coal mines were from the state of Ohio.

Melcher was established directly south of Dallas in 1913, and named after one of the Rock Island Railroad’s executives.

The two towns merged in 1986 and celebrate ‘Merger Day’ each May.

Home of the Saints, our K-6 building is in on the north side of Melcher-Dallas and the Junior/Senior high building is on the south edge of town.
